I was recently part of a fascinating discussion about workplace culture that shed a strong light on the varying expectations of different generations of employees. The people in the conversation represented all four age cohorts.
I recommend one solution to the frustration most of us experience - listening.
Boomers
Boomers are known for being optimistic. This generation controlled the workplace for decades. They have a strong work ethic and enjoy mentoring now that they are near the end of their working years. Boomers typically highly identify with their career roles. This generation previously negotiated favorable tuition assistance, health insurance and retirement benefits so their out-of-pocket expenses are relatively low while their earnings, at or just leaving the apex of their careers, are relatively high.
What Boomers appreciate in the work place
- Flexible schedules
Generation X
Members of Generation X are independent, innovative and strong communicators. They prioritize work-life balance. This generation is the first to grow up with computer technology, video games and cable TV. Relatively small in population, they have grown up in the shadow of the Boomers, who have not easily made room for them to advance their careers. They care about career path but may have "portfolio careers" with multiple employers. This is the "sandwich generation" often caring for aging parents and young children at the same time. They care about work-life integration.
What Generation X appreciates in the work place
- Both flexible schedules and work from home
Millennials
Millennials are the largest generation in the workforce. They experienced several traumatic events during their formative years such as the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and the financial crisis of 2008. Their paths to good careers were hampered by the Great Recession. Their ability to generate wealth was hampered by student debt. Members of this generation do not identify as strongly with employment and expect to change jobs frequently. They are comfortable with social media. They tend to focus on the greater good rather than employment promotion.
What Millennials appreciate in the work place
- Both flexible schedules and work from home
- Casual dress
- Articulation of corporate values of diversity
- Generous vacation time
Generation Z
People identified as Generation Z have existential concerns about climate change that previous generations have largely ignored, even though the warnings were clear. Gen Z has grown up in the digital world and are known as "multitaskers." They are digitally fluent, practical and flourish in diverse workforce settings. This generation expects annual raises to support their recreational lifestyles which are equally important to work. They may seek security and stability during unpredictable times.
What Generation Z appreciates in the work place
- Both flexible schedules and work from home
- Casual dress
- Articulation of corporate values of diversity and environmental sustainability
- Generous vacation time
- Regular salary raises
